BOTTLES
Bottle Collecting is something I fell into quite by accident. We were cleaning out an attic and I found a box of old bottles. I started reading the embossing on the bottles and went home to look up the bottles. I became so intrigued by the contents of the bottles and the history of these companies that I started scanning flea markets and antique shops for bottles. I have many of the more common bottles....part of the fun is not just in owning a rare and unique bottle, it's the chase of knowledge about that bottle's history that gets me excited. While I have a rather nice collection of bottles, I found that I adored the research and the absolutely fantastic claims of these patent medicines that were so popular at one time. As I researched the history of the bottles that I own, I found myself stopping to read about and discover various other quackery medications and patent medications.. For the longest time I would read what I found and then just move on. It wasn't until recently that I had a clear thought about my accidental research. I was scanning an 1897 newspaper for advertisements for medicine. I was coming upon advertisement upon advertisement. I knew that I would NEVER remember where those advertisements were again. I started to take a screenshot and save the advertisements into a folder just in case I ever came across a bottle and had the opportunity to buy /find one or at the very least have the chance to photograph the bottle. Thus, this website will also have random research that I find, even if I do not currently have the bottle in my possession! Hopefully someone else will benefit from my house of scanning and reviewing old newspapers!
