Atwood's Jaunice Bitters
Atwoods Jaundice Bitters Remedy
Bitters were a popular ‘medicine’ in the late 1800’s. (Most popular from 1860 to 1906). Most bitters marketed as medicinal but honestly, were simply herbs infused in some form of alcohol, giving the user a legitimate ‘reason’ to consume alcohol during times when alcohol consumption was socially unacceptable or even illegal.
Bitters were often packaged in unique manners .
Atwood Bitters was created by Moses Atwood from Georgetown, Mass in the early 1800’s and was actually on the market from 1835 to 1948. However, by 1850 Moses Atwood had completely sold his businesses. Unfortunately, he didn’t sell it all as one parcel but sold off bits and pieces of the business to various entities. Over the years this created a huge tug of war battle over the rights with claims of fraudulent product and ownership rights. (For a comprehensive history of the subsequent ownership check out Atwood’s Jaundice Bitters, Moses Atwood, Georgetown Mass. – Bay Bottles_) At one point I was able to discover that Atwoods Jaundice bitters was actually 22.3 percent alcohol.
